Hex-Beam HXi Series

The HXi series arrays are light, durable beams designed primarily for fixed station use and are built as mono or multi-banders. These wire arrays have withstood adverse conditions very well (3Y0, etc.). Contributing factors to its high strength/weight ratio are its 6-point suspension system, short spans, and balanced loading. All HEX-BEAMs, focus on "plug and play." Numerous manufacturing features simplify and assure successful assembly of HEX-BEAM arrays. The "hard work is already done." NO cutting, fitting, tuning, tweaking, or adjustment is necessary. All hardware and fittings are pre-mounted. All support lines are cut and assembled to their specific lengths. With only a few basic tools, the beam can literally be "popped" together in just an hour or so. The concern and worry of getting a beam up and "on the air" is significantly reduced because of its lightness and symmetry. Many HEX-BEAM users comment on the "ease of assembly and installation" as well as the tremendous savings on overall installation cost. This savings often amounts to thousands of dollars. With the HEX-BEAM, all trap, matching network, and element joint losses are eliminated. Also, for maximum efficiency, oversized mounting fittings are used for element attachment.

Mono-band arrays are designed to provide optimized performance in a given band or band segment. A mono-bander designed for the CW portion of 20M (design f =14.000) will cover all of the 20M with V.S.W.R. at 2:1 or less since V.S.W.R. bandwidth is approximately 3%. With this tuning best F/B and peak gain will be in the CW portion. A mono-bander designed for the SSB portion (design f =14.150) covers from 14.150 to well above 14.350 at 2:1 V.S.W.R. or less, but is not intended for operation below 14.150. Best F/B and peak gain will be moved to the bottom of SSB portion of 20M.

Multi-band arrays are generally more broadbanded. Overall, performance is similar to mono-band HEX-BEAMs. These arrays are tuned mono-banders on the same arms with a single feed-point. Traps, separate feed lines, or switch boxes aren't used. Element "spacing" remains optimum on each band.

The 5-band HX-5Bi array covers 10-12-15-17-20M. Primary design goals are convenience of instant band-change, economy of a single array with a single support and feed system, the durability of a known design, and legal limit capability. Though designed and built for long-term fixed-station use, the HX-5Bi is also excellent for emergency/DX-pedition use.

Structurally, the 7-14 mHz HXi mono-band and 14-30 mHz HXi multi-band arrays are built onto an aluminum plate. The entire "i" series includes high strength UV-resistant PhillystranTM lines at non-element spans which is expected to add 5+ years to the already excellent useable life of the HX series. Incorporation of an improved internal wiring harness utilizing Teflon® insulation, and insulators manufactured in house, assure the array's ability to handle power peaks well above its rated limit. These custom machined insulators are light, have low wind resistance, are non-hydroscopic, highly UV resistant, and have an exceptionally high dielectric strength. Also, TygonTM sheathing is now used at all arm/support line junctions to enhance array durability and survivability in high wind or high wind w/ice conditions. Stainless-steel hardware is used for arm attachment. An aluminum/magnesium hub is provided for mast attachment and the center support is made of UV resistant PVC. Arms are high-quality, custom built fiberglass. A silver/Teflon® SO-239 is provided for the feed-point. Radiating elements are made of stranded hard-drawn #14 copper wire that is custom wound for this application. HEX-BEAMS are rated at 1500W for 7-30mHz.
